Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty topped the box office this weekend grossing 24-million. But to some people’s surprise Marlon Wayans’ horror spoof A Haunted House came in second beating the all-star cast of the period mob film Gangster Squad.

You know how it goes – good and bad publicity can work in your favor. This may be the reason the manhunt pic starring Jessica Chastain, buy more about Joel Edgerton and Jason Clarke dominated its first wide release weekend. Some believe the controversial film about a CIA’s hunt for Osama bin Laden may suggest that America is a pro-torture nation. In addition, dosage a few political figures are calling for an investigation into the filmmakers access to classified government information. Zero Dark Thirty is up for five Oscar awards.

African-American and Latino moviegoers played a major role in helping A Haunted House gross $18.8 million for Open Road Films. I’m sure all of the promotions and movie screenings for the film played a part as well. A Haunted House is a parody of the Paranormal Activity franchise and other found-footage films.

Gangster Squad starring Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Hosh Brolin and Anthony Mackie underperformed bringing in $16.7 million. Originally, the movie was supposed to hit theaters last September. However, due to the Colorado theater shooting during The Dark Knight Rises screening, Gangster Squad was pushed back because of a scene similar to the Colorado theater shooting. The movie was shelved and its released date moved from a pre-Oscar September slot to January. The movie theater shooting sequence was deleted.

Gangster Squad may pick up steam, but could still run into problems with next weekend’s releases. Universal’s Mama, Broken City from Fox and Lionsgate’s Last Stand may give the mobster movie some competition. The wide release of the Oscar-nominated film, Silver Linings Playbook starring Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Tucker may also give the gangster flick some competition.

Django Unchained and Les Miserables continued successful box office runs coming in at number four and five respectively. Like Dark Zero Thirty, Quentin Tarantino’s Django has also seen its fair share of controversy.
