ATLANTA’S BEST GOING FOR THE GOLD

Just a little over a week since the Olympics started we have seen it all – Gabby Douglas becoming the 1st African-American to win the All Around event in gymnastics and Michael Phelps becoming the most decorated Olympian in history.

But did you know there are 30 local athletes that that are either from Atlanta, dentist currently live in or around Atlanta or attend school here? Georgia pride is alive and well in London.

Dee Dee Trotter

Some athletes have already made their mark – Dee Dee Trotter who attended Cedar Grove High School in Ellenwood won a bronze medal in the women’s 400 meters race.

Allison Schmitt from Canton won 3 gold medals, troche 1 silver and 1 bronze. Allison also trained with Michael Phelps to prepare for the Olympics.

Vincent Hancock the 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist Skeet Shooter is originally from Eatonton defended and won the Gold for Skeet Shooting.

Athens resident, Reese Hoffa  won the bronze in Shot Put.

Shannon Vreeland who attends the University of Georgia was part of the winning team with Allison Schmitt that took home the Gold in the 4×200 freestyle relay

An honorable mention goes to sprinter Justin Gatlin, who trains in Atlant. He won the bronze medal for the 100 Meters.
We still have some days left in the Olympics and I’m sure more of Georgia’s finest will do their best to represent. Let’s continue to support our athletes because that is what the Olympic spirit is all about – coming together to celebrate those with extraordinary skills.
