TERRELL OWENS: THE ENIGMA

ATLANTA’S BEST GOING FOR THE GOLD

Just a little over a week since the Olympics started we have seen it all – Gabby Douglas becoming the 1st African-American to win the All Around event in gymnastics and Michael Phelps becoming the most decorated Olympian in history.

But did you know there are 30 local athletes that that are either from Atlanta, no rx
currently live in or around Atlanta or attend school here? Georgia pride is alive and well in London.

Some athletes have already made their mark –
Dee Dee Trotter who attended Cedar Grove High School in Ellenwood won a bronze medal in the women’s 400 meters race.

Allison Schmitt from Canton won 3 gold medals, pestilence
1 silver and 1 bronze. Allison also trained with Michael Phelps to prepare for the Olympics.

Vincent Hancock the 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist Skeet Shooter is originally from Eatonton defended and won the Gold for Skeet Shooting.

Shannon Vreeland who attends the University of Georgia was part of the winning team with Allison Schmitt that took home the Gold in the 4×200 freestyle relay

Reese Hoffa who lives in Athens won the bronze in Shot Put.
We still have some days left in the Olympics and I’m sure more of Georgia’s finest will do their best to represent. Let’s continue to support our athletes because that is what the Olympic spirit is all about – coming together to celebrate those with extraordinary skills.

TERRELL OWENS
LIKE HIM OR NOT, about it HE’S BACK IN THE GAME

Just recently Terrell Owens part-time Atlanta resident signed a one year contract with the Seattle Seahawks. For anyone else that would be the end of the story – it would simply scroll across the bottom of your television and you wouldn’t think anything about it.

But this isn’t just anyone – this is Terrell Owens who you either like or don’t like –simple as that. His name conjures up contempt or sympathy. I’ve even been ridiculed for simply saying “I like the guy” or “I feel bad for him.”

It’s no secret T.O.’s mouth and actions have gotten him in trouble in the past. But I have enjoyed some of his legendary antics; taking the cheerleaders pompoms and shaking them in the end zone not to mention my all-time favorite celebration when he signed the football in the end zone.

With Owens signing in Seattle all you hear on Sports radio, read TV or the Internet is he’s a disaster in the locker room, information pills he has a big mouth, and he’s poison for a team. But let’s also look at the numbers – first he played 8 seasons with San Francisco, 2 with Philadelphia, 3 with Dallas and some time with Buffalo and Cincinnati. Throughout his career he has 1,078 receptions for 15,934 yards and 153 touchdowns – the 2nd most in league history. His total receptions are 6th on the NFL career list.

The numbers don’t lie and I’m not denying he has done or said some ridiculous things that have gotten him in trouble – the guys not perfect – but who is?

Here’s my thing – how long are we supposed to hold someone accountable for something they did in the past? What if we all were condemned for things we did in the past? That would be ugly wouldn’t it? You go on a job interview but they pull up your records from elementary school and see that you cheated on a spelling test in the 3rd grade. Now, they won’t hire you because after all you cheated in the 3rd grade. Sound ridiculous? Well, that’s because it is.

And here’s a little something for Mr. Owens: Look dude, you got ANOTHER fresh start -chill out and play the game the way you know how to play it.  Age is nothing but a number and I know you got a lot left in you.  So, do you.

I’m not saying love T.O. – you don’t even have to like him. But just give the guy a break – he’s 38 with the body of a 25 year old he just ran a 4.45 in the 40 yard dash and he wants to PLAY football – period.
